Not only do the students become more familiar with the topic, but they also develop contacts with industry professionals that often lead to career opportunities. The College of Business & Technology Professional Development Series is an event for which I offer my students extra credit for attending at least two workshops. Student feedback reveals that they are impacted by the workshop content and the opportunity to interact with business leaders. Financial Health students are required to complete the O*NET Interest Profiler in order to help them identify what their interests are and how they relate to the world of work. The O*NET Interest Profiler helps student decide what kinds of careers they might want to explore. Since the profiler is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment & Training Administration, my students develop an understanding of the relationship that exists between society and government. Another significant activity that has a great impact on my students is that I require them to obtain their personal credit report at annualcreditreport.com. Even with all of the advertising surrounding credit reports and scores, they are surprised to learn that their personal financial history is contained in one single report. I collaborate with four Edward Jones branch offices to collect and distribute Edward Jones Perspective, a monthly newsletter written for clients of Edward Jones. I make this newsletter available to every student in FIN 101. Students indicate that the publication gives them the opportunity to apply concepts learned in the classroom. In order to promote philanthropic activity, I provide students with an opportunity to identify a giving opportunity that they can conduct individually, or as a group, where the gift of time, talent, or money can be multiplied over time. While some students may participate in established causes, others choose to originate, plan, and participate in their own activity. ENGAGEMENT I attend classes offered by the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research (CITR) in order to continuously improve on my teaching skills, both in the classroom and online. Specifically, I participated in four training sessions that will increase student engagement/collaboration through the use of Zoom Videoconferencing, TedEd, YouTube, and Google Drive. Another session taught me how to create quizzes in Western Online so that I have more class time available for group activities and discussion. The final session that I attended during the last year provided me with insight on recruitment opportunities for faculty. I learned that faculty play an important role in recruiting students to any institution. In addition to learning opportunities through the university, I pursue professional improvement through a variety of other ways. As a member of my local school board, I have taken classes on leadership development, evaluation, and the Open Meetings Act offered through the Illinois Association of School Boards. I attend meetings offered by investment companies so that my classroom discussions are based on current trends. Another source of professional development comes from continuing education classes to maintain my Insurance Producer and Locksmith licenses with the State of Illinois. Each of these forms of professional improvement provide a platform for student engagement, whether in the classroom or one-on-one. Whether participating in service throughout the university or in the community these activities provide numerous opportunities to engage with students. I enjoy the direct interaction that occurs through addressing student organizations, as well as the indirect contact that arises through serving on committees and contributing to community organizations.
