External Graduate Assistantships

Thank you for your interest in our external graduate assistantship program at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼. We are excited to share information about this unique program and how it can benefit your institution and provide a rich learning and professional development experience for your students. This is a program we have developed and made available to external institutions to offer greater employment and practical experience opportunities for °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ graduate students. External graduate assistants are part-time employees (up to 20 hours per week) who work for you while pursuing an online master’s degree in College Student Personnel from °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼.

°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ has offered the CSP degree for over 50 years, but only recently has it also been available in an online format. Students will meet on Zoom with their cohort four Saturdays each semester, with the rest of their coursework to be completed online. Graduate assistants typically take 3 classes (approximately 9 credits) during the fall and spring semesters and 1-2 classes (3-6 credits) during the summer.

Colleges from coast to coast are eligible to participate.ÌýStudents may hold external assistantships in any office on their campus, including admissions, housing, student activities, and athletics.

Cohorts begin every fall. To start in fall 2025, students should have their applications submitted by May 1, 2025.Ìý

How Does It Work?

We’re particularly interested in recruiting students working at liberal arts institutions without their own graduate programs. We know it’s hard to recruit staff these days, so we hope the opportunity to grow your own staff, while also providing a tuition-free, high-quality master’s degree will be attractive.

Here's how the process works:

  1. Employers will identify individuals who would be great graduate assistants for their offices and institutions.
  2. Students will apply to the CSP Program.
  3. Once accepted, a contract will be signed with the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ Graduate School for the assistantship.
  4. °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ will waive tuition. Really.
  5. Students will be responsible for paying fees (around $98/credit hour).
  6. Employers will pay the monthly GA stipend. (As of July 2024, it is $816 per month for 13 hours per week, or $1,224 per month for 20 hours per week. Both options are eligible for the tuition waiver).
  7. GA contracts are for eight months each academic year. It takes most students two years (including summers) to complete the program. Summer tuition is covered under the GA contract.
  8. Contact Dr. Jeff Hancks, Professor, at (309) 762-9481 or JL-Hancks@wiu.edu for more details.

What Are My Obligations?

Besides the monthly stipend, institutions are responsible for supervising graduate assistants and ensuring they have a rewarding co-curricular and employment experience.Ìý
