W. J. T. Mitchell, Spring 2012 Magliocco Lecture
"The Arts of Occupation: Image, Space, Revolution"

University of Chicago Professor of English and Art History W. J. T. Mitchell will present the Magliocco Lecture in the Department of English and Journalism at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ Thursday, April 5.
His lecture, "The Arts of Occupation: Image, Space, Revolution," is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Morgan Hall 109.
Mitchell is the editor of the interdisciplinary journal, "Critical Inquiry," which examines critical theory in the arts and human sciences. The quarterly journal has tackled issues such as psychoanalysis, pluralism, feminism, the sociology of literature, race and identity and many other topics, according to his website (). He is the recipient of numerous prestigious honors including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Morey Prize in art history given by the College of Art Association of America. Mitchell received the University of Chicago's faculty award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching (2003). His publications include "The Pictorial Turn," "What Do Pictures Mean?," "The Last Dinosaur Book: The Life and Times of a Cultural Icon," "Picture Theory" and "Art and the Public Sphere."
The Maurine Magliocco Lecture Series in the Department of English and Journalism was established in October 2006. The $30,000 endowment commitment supports an annual lecture in literature, film, theory or the state of the discipline. Magliocco taught English at Western for 37 years, retiring in 2004.
