The DITTUS SCHOLARSHIP was established by Loren K. and Jo Anne Dittus. Dr. Dittus served as Professor and Associate Dean, College of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER).

The WIX GARNER SCHOLARSHIP was established in memory of Dr. Charles "Wix" Garner. "Wix" served 澳门六合彩历史记录 in the Department of Physical Education from 1937 until his retirement in 1965. He served in many capacities during his tenure at Western; including Director of Athletics on several occasions, and as head football coach, head baseball coach and professor.

CRITERIA:

  • 3.0 GPA after completion of 5 semesters and minimum of 75 semester hours

  • Male
  • Junior
  • Demonstration of Participation and Leadership Qualities in Intercollegiate, Intramural, or Club Sports and/or student activities

The WILLIAM HUGHES SCHOLARSHIP was established in the Spring of 1982 to honor Bill Hughes, former Professor and Department Chair of Men's Physical Education. Bill Hughes served as Department Chairperson from 1968 until his retirement in 1982.

CRITERIA:

  • Incoming Freshmen

  • Demonstrated leadership and/or extra-curricular involvement in high school

The WILLIAM L. LAKIE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established by his wife, Mary, and family and friends, in memory of William L. Lakie. Dr. Lakie was Dean of the College of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) from 1971 until his death in April, 1988.

CRITERIA:

  • 3.5 GPA
  • Graduate student
  • Demonstration of Academic Achievement
  • Demonstration of Extra-curricular professional activities
  • Demonstration of Leadership Qualities in University/Community/Professional Activities

The MATTHEW H. MCGUINESS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established by Denise Otto McGuinness, in memory of her son, Matthew. Matthew never attended 澳门六合彩历史记录. However, when he was killed in an auto accident in August, 1988 his mother, a 1959 graduate of 澳门六合彩历史记录, established this scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a non-traditional studies program student (generally, a student 25 years or older who started college later in life; or one whose education was interrupted and is now returning to campus to complete his/her degree).

CRITERIA:

  • 2.75 GPA after 24 semester hours completed at 澳门六合彩历史记录
  • Non-traditional undergraduate student (25 years or older)
  • Male
  • Evidence of involvement in community

The MARYELLEN MCKEE SCHOLARSHIP was established for freshman majoring in Kinesiology. Dr. McKee retired in 1984 after 28 years at 澳门六合彩历史记录 in the Physical Education Department.

CRITERIA:

  • One female and one male scholarship available for incoming freshmen
  • Must have an ACT of 21 or higher or be in top 10% of high school graduating class
  • Must have been accepted by 澳门六合彩历史记录 at time of application
  • Must maintain GPA of 3.0 over a 4-year term and remain in Kinesiology

Application for the MaryEllen McKee Scholarship

The M. BERNADINE MINGS SCHOLARSHIP was established for M. Bernadine Mings who was 澳门六合彩历史记录's first athletic academic advisor. As a member of the Physical Education faculty and an athletic advisor she was credited with elevating Western's student-athlete graduation rate among the highest of all NCAA institutions. This scholarship, in her name, is intended especially for those student-athletes who are majoring in Kinesiology.

CRITERIA:

  • 3.0 GPA
  • Junior or Senior Kinesiology Major
  • Current student-athlete of 澳门六合彩历史记录 athletic team for at least one academic year
  • Demonstration of positive personal characteristics with strong leadership qualities, sound work ethics, and eagerness toward life's challenges

The DORA SHARP SCHOLARSHIP was established by Helen Yeast of Sahaurita,听Arizona to honor Dora Sharp, Head of Women's Physical Education at 澳门六合彩历史记录. Ms. Sharp came to Western in 1925 and remained until her retirement in 1943. She came to Western because she had always been interested in helping women who were planning to teach Physical Education.

  • Must show promise as a teacher

The LOLA "WESTY" WESTENDORF SCHOLARSHIP was established in honor of Lola Westendorf, retired professor of Women's Physical Education and assistant and head coach of Women鈥檚 Volleyball.

The HELEN MCCUTCHEON YEAST SCHOLARSHIP was established by Helen McCutcheon-Yeast. Mrs. McCutcheon-Yeast was "literally raised at Western, first grade through college," graduating in 1935. The scholarship is for transfer students majoring in Physical Education.

CRITERIA:

  • Available to incoming transfer students from an Illinois community college
  • Must have earned a minimum of 30 semester hours at the community college level
  • Cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.0 (on a 4 pt. scale)
  • High school and college honors and participation in extra-cuNUTRITIONrricular activities, clubs, and organizations will be considered.

The LILA S. LINDER DIETETICS AND NUTRITION SCHOLARSHIP is open to Freshman-level students majoring in Dietetics and Nutrition at 澳门六合彩历史记录. Priority will be given to an incoming high school student from Cass County. If no Cass County freshman applicant is available, any Illinois high school graduates may apply.

CRITERIA:

  • Be an incoming high school graduate in the upper 20% of his/her class or have an ACT total score of 20 or better.
  • Must be majoring in Dietetics or Nutrition and a full-time student at 澳门六合彩历史记录 during the scholarship period.
  • Must demonstrate dependability, leadership and service to high school and/or community.

  • Be a sophomore who has completed at least 30 semester hours at 澳门六合彩历史记录 and plans to graduate from the University.
  • Have attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above.
  • Be a full-time student during the scholarship period.
  • Have completed at least 6 semester hours in Dietetics and Nutrition at 澳门六合彩历史记录.

The NANCY NEELEY DIETETICS AND NUTRITION SCHOLARSHIP was established from contributions made by alumni, faculty, friends and family in recognition of her contribution to the students and the profession.

CRITERIA:

  • Be a major in Dietetics or Nutrition at 澳门六合彩历史记录
  • Be full-time students during the scholarship period
  • Demonstrate dependability, leadership and service
  • Show evidence of intent to graduate from the University

To be eligible as an incoming freshman, the applicant must:

  • Be a high school graduate in the upper 20% of his/her graduating class OR have an ACTof 20 or above

To be eligible as a sophomore, the applicant must:

The SARAH MINER DIETETICS AND NUTRITION SCHOLARSHIP was established by department alumni contributions in recognition of an individual who continuously gave to her students, the Department, faculty, community and 澳门六合彩历史记录 her inspiration, leadership and contributions.

CRITERIA:

  • Be majoring in Dietetics or Nutrition at 澳门六合彩历史记录.
  • Be a junior, senior or fifth year student.
  • Have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours in Dietetics and Nutrition.
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or above.
  • Be a full-time student during the scholarship period.

To be eligible, transfer students must:

  • Be majoring in Dietetics and Nutrition at 澳门六合彩历史记录.
  • Have completed at least 9 of the required 12 semester hours at 澳门六合彩历史记录.
  • Have attained a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or above at 澳门六合彩历史记录.
  • Be a junior, senior or fifth year student.

The MARION SYMPSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established in 1992 as the result of a very generous $25,000 bequest from Marion Sympson"s estate. Ms. Sympson was an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois, where she served as assistant state leader in the Home Economics Department, retiring in 1969. Ms. Sympson was a 1928 澳门六合彩历史记录 graduate with a major in Home Economics. Ms. Sympson requested that the funds be used to support Home Ec students. The Department chose to allow the fund to support an internship scholarship per the terms below.

CRITERIA:

  • Dietetics or Nutrition student completing an internship during theaward period. (typically the summer before or after the senior year)
  • Be a student majoring in Dietetics or Nutrition at 澳门六合彩历史记录.
  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or above.
  • Complete an internship immediately after completion of all required coursework or with the permission of the department chair.
  • Seniors must have completed at least 30 semester hours in Dietetics or Nutrition coursework at 澳门六合彩历史记录.
  • Show a strong interest and involvement in Dietetics or Nutrition clubs and employment.
  • Preference will be given to students completing unpaid internships.
  • There is no citizenship requirement.

The DOROTHY HOLLAND SCHOLARSHIP was established in March 2003 to provide scholarship assistance to outstanding students in the DFMH Department with career goals in the food area.

CRITERIA:

  • A minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Completed a minimum of 15 SH in Dietetics and Nutrition
  • Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing

The Chef John Lawrence Endowed Scholarship was established July 25, 2006 to award a scholarship to a student majoring in Dietetics.

CRITERIA:

  • The student should have Junior or Senior standing when the scholarship funding is to be received.
  • Applicants must write a narrative describing their dedication to the profession of Dietetics, support of the DFMH department, and dietetic related activities that the student has participated.

The NOLA AND LaVERN MCENTIRE DIETETICS SCHOLARSHIP was established January 25, 2008 by Nola and LaVern McEntire. The scholarship was established to give monetary support to students pursuing the degree option in Dietetics. This scholarship provides $2000 annually ($1000 each for fall and spring semesters) to the student鈥檚 account. Financial need is not a consideration.

CRITERIA:

  • Be a student pursuing the option in Dietetics.
  • Applicants must have junior standing (60 hours or more) by the end of the semester of application.
  • A minimum grade point average of 3.25 is required.D. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

In addition to completing the application form, the student must submit to the Department Chair:

  • Dietetics or Nutrition faculty person addressing leadership and service within the Department and University community
  • An employer and/or community organization sponsor addressing evidence of service within the University or community
  • Another individual addressing evidence of service and leadership.

The MARGARET LAVERY SCHOLARSHIP. Dr. Margaret Lavery graduated from 澳门六合彩历史记录 in Family and ConsumerSciences. She did her graduate work at Texas Women鈥檚 University and her doctoral work atUniversity of Texas. She worked as a clinical assistant professor of medicine and nutrition at Marshall University School of Medicine. She also was a private practitioner and a clinical dietitian. Dr. Lavery received the Huddleston Award for best article published in The Journal of American Dietetic Association in 1990.

CRITERIA:

  • Dietetics Major
  • 3.20 GPA
  • 60 hours of undergraduate credit
