Mike FanslerÌýis Professor of Music andÌýDirector of Bands at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ in Macomb, Illinois,Ìýwhere he leads its comprehensive band program. He serves as conductor of the university wind ensemble andÌýchamber players and teaches graduate and undergraduate conducting. He has served Western IllinoisÌýUniversity since 2001.

Dr. Fansler has accepted performance invitations and delivered conducting seminars and workshops on fiveÌýcontinents. He regularly conducts honor bands throughout the United States including recent engagementsÌýwith the Pennsylvania All-State Wind Ensemble, Region 22 Texas Music Educators Association Honor Band,ÌýLas Vegas Honor Band and All-Iowa Band. He has lectured on the musicÌýof Percy Grainger at the MidwestÌýClinic and, through a grant, visited the Grainger Museum in Melbourne, Australia, to further research his musicÌýand life.

Under his leadership the Western Illinois Wind Ensemble maintains a demanding performance scheduleÌýpresenting a range of repertoire from historically significant masterworks to exciting world premieres. In theÌýpast decade the group has engaged audiences at multiple Illinois Music Education Conferences, the College BandÌýDirectors National Association’s North Central Conference, twice at the prestigious Armour Stage in Chicago’sÌýOrchestra Hall and internationally on a 10-day tour of Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Dr. Fansler and the Wind Ensemble recently releasedÌýÌý(Navona Records)Ìýfeaturing David Maslanka’sÌýO Earth, O StarsÌýandÌýSymphony No. 10, both of which were commissioned in partÌýby °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼. The °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ Studio Faculty and student ensemble, "Chamber Players" can be heard on the newly released albumÌý(Klavier Records). They also own the premiere transcription recording of Brahms’ÌýVariation and Fugue on a Theme by Handel,ÌýOp. 24, which was dedicated to Dr. FanslerÌýby the transcriber, Joseph Kreines.ÌýDr. Fansler has collaborated with the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ studio faculty on many important engagements, including the lead commission and premiere recordings of two chamber works of James M. Stephenson:Ìý, a sequel to IgorÌýStravinsky’sÌýÌýL’Histoire du SoldatÌý(Ravello Records, 2015) and most recently,Ìý ,Ìýalso a Stravinsky sequel (Klavier Records, 2021).Ìý

His main musical influences are James F. Keene, Jon Dugle, Daniel J. Schmidt, Larry Clark, Ronald Caravan, Gunnar Mossblad, Merry Fitz-Randolph, and William Meckley.ÌýHis education is from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Syracuse University, James MadisonÌýUniversity, and Schenectady County Community College. Dr. Fansler remains actively engaged in the MacombÌýcommunity as conductor of the Macomb Municipal Band (est. 1852) and saxophonist in the American Legion’sÌýPost 6 Big Band.ÌýHis professional memberships include the prestigious American Bandmasters Association (2012), CollegeÌýBand Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, Illinois Music EducatorsÌýAssociation, Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He resides in Avon,ÌýIllinois, with his wife, Abby, and they remain busy chasing the countless activities of three talented kids -ÌýJordan, Jessica, and Juliet.
