Youth to Explore Enriching Topics this Summer

MACOMB, IL - - The °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ department of Study Abroad and Outreach will offer four youth enrichment programs at the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼-Macomb campus this summer. The youth camps, which range from a variety of topics, will be offered during the months of June and July. Students interested in science, Harry Potter, web design, math and art will have the opportunity to explore these topics in depth.
During their stay at Western, students will also enjoy extracurricular activities including swimming, indoor/outdoor games, movies and bowling. Students are supervised by faculty and carefully selected resident counselors to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ campus.
All programs require a recommendation by a teacher or school administrator, and registration for the programs must be completed five days before the start of each camp.

Exploring Harry Potter: The Sorcerer's Stone (June 29-July 2) is offered for students in grades 5-7 (as of Jan 2015). This program is specifically designed to stimulate and challenge students who read and enjoy the Harry Potter series. Under the guidance of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼'s English and Chemistry departments, students will have the opportunity to expand their enjoyment of the Harry Potter series while at the same time gaining valuable skills in literature, writing, science, and film studies. This program is a commuter program only and is limited to 24 students. The full commuter fee is $249, which includes instruction, supplies, and lunch.

Discovering the World Through Science (June 7-12) is offered to students who have completed at least one year of high school. The program is designed for students who have a budding interest in the sciences and wish to further explore career opportunities and options for future study in a scientific field. This program is a residential program only and commuter students are not accepted. Enrollment is limited to 18 students. The registration fee is $475 and includes tuition, supplies, all scheduled extracurricular activities, lodging and all meals.

Web Design: Constructing a Technology Toolbox (July 12-17) is offered for students in grades 9-11(as of Jan 2015). This program is designed for students interested in art, graphic communication or technology who would like to build their own website or learn about and explore web design as a potential career field. Students will learn how to use programs such as Adobe Dreamweaver CS6, Adobe Photoshop CS6, Wordpress and Adobe Premiere CS6. This program is residential only and commuter students are not accepted. Enrollment is limited to 25 students. The registration fee is $499, which includes tuition, supplies, all scheduled extracurricular activities, lodging and all meals.

Girls Plus Math (July 19-24) is offered for female students between the ages of 11 and 13. Participants will explore critical thinking skills, web page creation and computer software, along with mathematical concepts and equations throughout the week. Girls Plus Math promotes interest in mathematics, a willingness to take risks in analysis and the self-confidence and motivation to persist in problem solving. This program is residential only and commuter students are not accepted. Enrollment is limited to 24 students. The registration fee is $499, which includes tuition, supplies, all scheduled extracurricular activities, lodging and all meals.

Art for Gifted and Talented Students is offered June 14-19 for students in grades 4-6 and on June 21-26 for students in grades 6-8. Students in this program will study drawing, painting, airbrush, computer art and many varied forms of three-dimensional expression. Under the guidance of Western's Department of Art faculty, local artists and their assistants, students will have daily opportunities to expand their skills and explore new ideas. This program is open to commuter and residential students; however, enrollment is limited. The full commuter fee is $395, which includes instruction, supplies and lunch. The residential fee is $445, which additionally includes all meals and lodging.
