Park Named November EOM
November 22, 2024
MACOMB, IL – °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ employee Sean Park, a dedicated member of the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs (IIRA), has been named the November 2024 Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month.
Park has been a vital contributor to °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼'s mission through their work supporting rural communities across Illinois.
Since joining °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ in October 2012 as a Faculty Assistant for the IIRA, and transitioning to their current role as Program Director on February 2019, Park has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of rural residents. Their unique combination of passion for community service and technical expertise has helped secure grant funding that advances food access and community development initiatives.
Their nominator, John Bannon, highlighted Park's exemplary dedication, particularly in their work with the RISE Community Market in Cairo. For years, Park collaborated with local residents, state and federal agencies and non-profit organizations to address the community's food desert. Their efforts culminated in the establishment of a grocery store, providing access to fresh food for a community where many face financial challenges. This project has significantly improved the quality of life for Cairo residents since the city's last grocery store closed in 2015.
In addition to their hands-on work in communities, Park is a frequent presenter at state and national conferences, where they advocate for °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ and promote its programs. Their efforts have elevated the University's reputation as a leader in rural development and community outreach.
The Civil Service Employees Council, which established this award to honor employees who demonstrate exceptional enthusiasm, effort and quality in their job performance, commended Park for going above and beyond in their role. Their nomination will be added to their permanent personnel file in the Human Resources office.
As the November 2024 Civil Service Employee of the Month, Park will receive a $100 stipend (before taxes), a plaque, a reserved parking space and recognition in °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ communications. They will also be eligible for the Civil Service Employee of the Year Award in December.
The Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month Award was established in 2010 through an endowment created by the Goldfarbs, and the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the annual Employee of the Year Award.
Western faculty, staff, administrators and community members wishing to nominate a civil service employee for monthly recognition can contact the Civil Service Employees Council at csec-nominations-g@wiu.edu.
