Editor's Note: This is a series of stories about °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Alumna Elisabeth Hanson has always grown up in Macomb and has fond memories of her experience at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼.

"When I think of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼, I think of home," Hanson said. "I grew up in Macomb, and although I was later a student, I have fond memories of attending theater performances, tailgating football games and attending band and choir camp as a high schooler. I spent a lot of time at Horn Field Campus attending events, working the high ropes course and climbing wall, and learning about the native Illinois prairie. °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ was a big part of growing up."

Hanson feels like being a Leatherneck means perseverance.

Her favorite memory at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ is the International Bazaar which she has attended since she was a child.

"My favorite memory was winning first, second and third place at the photo contest for photos I took while in the field, in India for anthropology and religious studies credits," Hanson said.

Hanson feels °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ prepared her for a rewarding career as a project manager for a small biotechnology company that develops cancer pharmaceuticals.

"I was able to take classes in the anthropology department in biological anthropology and I was enraptured. I went on to a graduate program in New York for Biomedical Anthropology and have been in biotech ever since. The anthropology and religious studies departments were my home at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ — I had so many amazing opportunities and experiences there," Hanson said.

Hanson remembers going to shows and checking out various art installations around campus.

"I also worked for Horn Field Campus as a climbing/high ropes instructor, which was an absolute blast," Hanson said.

Hanson advises students to attend °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ because it will give them a great education.

"°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ will help springboard you into your next adventure and you get to live in a beautiful, community-driven town. Also, visit the extensions! Horn Field Campus is an incredible place to get outside and watch the seasons change," Hanson said.

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
