Policy on Articulating Credit for Advanced Placement and External Examinations
Responsibility for coordinating the evaluation and articulation of new and revised Advanced Placement exams, as well as Credit by External Examination options, such as College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Defense Activity for Nontraditional Education Support (DANTES), International Baccalaureate (IB), Proficiency Examination Program (PEP), and the Seal of Biliteracy, resides with the Office of Admissions in collaboration with the appropriate academic departments and/or faculty governance groups. When a new or revised exam option is presented, the Office of Admissions will utilize the following steps to determine the applicable academic credit to be awarded to the undergraduate student:
- Departmental Review: In cases where the exam content appears to fall under the domain of a particular academic department, the Office of Admissions will send the information to the appropriate department with a request for articulation. The academic department may recommend the awarding of a direct °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ course equivalent, departmental elective credit, or no departmental credit.
- Council on General Education Review: In cases where the exam content appears to align with °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼'s general education curriculum, and there is either not a clear academic department associated with the exam content, or the academic department has reviewed the content and awarded either departmental elective credit or no departmental credit, the Office of Admissions will send the information to the Council on General Education for consideration of non-course specific general eucation credit (i.e. 3 hours of Humanities credit).
- General Elective Consideration: If no direct °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ course equivalent, departmental elective, or general education credit is awarded in steps 1-2 above, then general elective credit will be awarded as appropriate based on the exam scores, in accordance with applicable state law.
