Minimum Online Technology Specificiations

COMPUTER

Desktop or Laptop Computer with the minimum specifications listed below.

High-Speed broadband (DSL/Cable) Speed of 3.0 Mbps or higher. 听Public Wi-Fi and cellular connections may not provide a fast enough connection speed for a reliable experience. You will need a stable connection to participate in your online courses.听

WEB BROWSER

Western Online is supported to run on the latest versions of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox for Macintosh OS X 12 or later and Microsoft Windows 10 or later. These are the top recommended browsers for use with Western Online.听

You should do the following items regularly to ensure the best performance in online courses:听

Review your course syllabus to determine which 3rd party applications your instructor uses, and visit the support information on the vendor鈥漵 website for further information.听

Minimum Technology Skills

Before beginning an online course, learners must be able to:听

  • Define computer terminologies such as, browser, operating system, application, software, files, documents, etc.听
  • Perform basic computer and hardware operations, such as:听
    • Manage files and folders: save, name,copy, move, backup, rename, delete, check properties, etc.听
    • Download and install software applications.听
    • Create and Edit Documents, Presentations, and Spreadsheets using applications such as Microsoft Office or Google Apps for Education.听
    • Perform functions such as copying/pasting, spell-checking, printing, and saving files in various formats.听
    • Upload/download attachments and documents.听
    • Compose, receive, send, and reply to an email.听
    • Use internet skills to connect, access, and browse websites.听
    • Use online communication tools such as discussion boards.听
    • Perform online research using search engines and library databases.听
    • Maintain user information for online accounts such as email, LMS logins, etc.听

Respondus Lockdown Browser

On June 28, 2023, Respondus will end support for Windows 7 computers. LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor will cease working on Windows 7 computers at that time.听

Students using Windows 7 must upgrade to Windows 10/11 or use a supported device to use Respondus.听

Supported devices include those running Windows 10+, Mac 10.13+. Chromebooks, and iPads running iOS 11+ (the iPad setting must be enabled by the instructor) are also supported.听
