Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society

About

Our Phi Delta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, with approximately 35 members in Macomb and the Quad Cities, was established at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ in 1941, making it one of the oldest chapters in the country. Chapter members have the opportunity to participate in scholarly and social activities at the local, regional, and national levels.

  • Locally, students may attend potluck dinners held at the homes of English faculty each semester, may participate in campus service projects and book drives, may serve as chapter officers, may attend our annual spring picnic, and may help to select our annual speaker. Students also help create, edit, and publish one of our English department's magazines .Ìý
  • Regionally, students may present their academic papers at conferences in the Midwest, including our own chapter’s conference held each fall at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼.
  • Nationally, students may apply to give critical or creative paper presentations at the juried international convention held each spring. We have sent students to present at the convention each of the past six years, when the convention was held in cities such as New Orleans, Portland, Savannah, and Minneapolis. Students may also submit their critical papers, short stories, poems, and creative non-fiction for publication in the society’s peer-reviewed journals, . Chapter members are also eligible to apply for and .

Eligibility to Become a Member:

  • All English majors and minors who have completed at least 6 s.h. of English coursework beyond English 280
  • Have at least a 3.0 overall GPA
  • Have at least a 3.0 GPA in their English courses
  • By the middle of each semester, applications are sent via email attachment to English majors and minors who are eligible to join the honor society. For more information about becoming a member, please contact our chapter advisor.

  • In 2012 and , our Phi Delta chapter was selected as one of three "Outstanding Chapters" worldwide.
