Finding Articles

The °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ Libraries subscribe to a number of indexes that can be used to find agriculture-related information, including articles in scholarly journals, books, popular magazines, newspapers and government publications. Indexes can be found by clicking on the Select a Database link on the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ Libraries web site. The following indexes can be useful in locating agricultural information. To find information in these indexes, search for terms that describe your topic of interest.

Agricola

An index to articles in scholarly journals, government publications and other resources. Includes links to some full-text publications. Some full text also available using the Find It button.

Biological and Agricultural Index

An index to articles in 225 journals. Includes some full-text articles. Full text can also be found using the Find It button.

Biological Abstracts

An index to articles in over 4000 journals. Full text can also be found using the Find It button.

Nexis Uni

Full-text access to articles in newspapers, magazines and legal periodicals.

Academic Search Complete

An index to articles in popular and scholarly periodicals. Includes some full-text articles. Full text can also be found using the Find It button.

Finding Federal Government Information

The U.S. Government produces a wide variety of agriculture related information, including reports from government and legislative agencies, data, Congressional hearings, bills and laws. Some of this information can be located using two indexes to U.S. Government information. These indexes can be found by clicking on Select a Database on the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ Libraries web site.

Catalog of U.S. Government Publications

An index to publications from U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Many recent publications are available in full-text. LexisNexis Congressional – Access to U.S. Congressional publications, including hearings, debates, reports, bills and laws. Most Congressional publications from 1990 to the present are available online.

Finding Books and Other Publications

Books and other publications available in the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ Libraries can be located using WestCat, the Libraries’ online catalog. It is also possible to search for materials in other Illinois libraries by clicking on the I-Share link in WestCat. Searches in WestCat will be repeated automatically in the I-Share Catalog. If an item is not available in the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ Libraries, it can be borrowed from another library through Interlibrary Loan.

A statistical reference source with data on agricultural production, prices, and exports. Available on CD-ROM in Government Publications, 4th Floor, Malpass Library, GOVCDROM. A 1.47/2:YEAR. Some data also available on the web.

taken every 5 years, the Census of Agriculture counts all U.S. farms and ranches. It contains information on agricultural production, land use & ownership, farm operator characteristics, production practices, income, farm expenditures and other topics.

A weekly report that provides statistics on the planting, growing, and harvesting progress and condition of selected crops in major producing states. Issued during the growing season.

Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that collects and disseminates all types of agricultural statistics.

A site that includes weekly national agricultural weather summaries, information on the weather's effect on crops and summaries and farm progress. Includes a link to Crop Progress.

Web Resources

Government Information

The USDA web site contains links to information on a wide variety of topics, including rural development, natural resource management, research, markets and trade, statistics, laws and agriculture-related bills being considered by the U.S. Congress.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture’s web site contains links to information on agriculture-related issues in Illiniois, such as crop diseases, IDA services, agricultural issues and grant opportunities.

Intergovernmental Organization Information Resources

The FAO serves both developed and developing countries to improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries to ensure adequate nutrition for all people of the World.
