Choosing Université Laval is choosing Québec City, the capital of the Province of Québec. The city is located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, and is known for its European charm, breathtaking vistas, and unique neighborhoods. Over half of the campus is wooded areas, grasslands, botanical gardens and sports fields.

Entry Requirements

Passport:Ìý Required. Must be valid for at least six (6) months after your study abroad program ends.Ìý For information on how to apply for or renew a passport, see Passports 101 .
Current passport processing times areÌý12-18 weeks.Ìý Plan accordingly to avoid issues obtaining your visa, airine tickets, and other necessary items for travel.Ìý Failure to receive your passport in time can lead to postponement of your program.

Visa:Ìý You must apply for a study permit before entering Canada if you are studying there for 6 months or longer.Ìý Due to COVID-19, you must apply for a study permit if you are studying there for 6 months or less (7/29/21).Ìý Study permit requirements can be found on the
Traveling to Canada without your study permit can lead to denied entry to Canada, forced removal from your program, and financial consequences.

Health Insurance

It is University policy that you must have international health insurance for the time you are abroad.Ìý Only two options are approved to meet this requirement:

Health Precautions

COVID-19 - You areÌýREQUIRED Ìýto be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to participate in this program. Proof of vaccination will be required prior to °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ registration.

Walking/mobility/travel - Expect more walking than on-campus.Ìý It is a mixture of urban (pavement/concrete) and natural (grass/dirt) terrain, including uneven/hilly terrain and up/down flights of stairs.Ìý Some historic sites and tourist areas have limited handicapped accessibility.Ìý Sidewalks in these areas can be narrow with uneven surfaces. Academics

Exchange students at Laval take 4-5 classes per semester, equaling 12-15 sh at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼.
Courses are graded on a 4 point scale with letter grades of A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D and E.

Courses at Laval are taught in English or French:
English-taught classes are offered in the College of Business only . For more information about courses, see the .Ìý Those taught in English are designated with a checkmark.Ìý
You can take up to two French language immersion classes as part of your exchange semester.


French-taught classes are for students fluent in French.Ìý French-taught classes must be from the same academic area as your °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ major/minor.Ìý Proof of fluency is required by Laval for acceptance to French-taught classes.

French language immersion courses are for students who want to improve their fluency in French.Ìý Courses are offered at five levels starting with Beginner.Ìý You may register as a full-time student (4 or 5 classes) in the French immersion program.Ìý These courses are taught during semesters only on a full-time basis.

Summer programs

Summer French: Laval offers 5-week French as a foreign language intensive programs during the summer.Ìý You may take this as a stand-alone program to improve your French fluency or as a crash course in French prior to your exchange semester.Ìý Either program is worth 6 °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ semester hours.Ìý For more information, see .Ìý

Summer Business:ÌýLaval offers various summer Business programs taught in English, open to students from any undergraduate discipline. The summer business program is not part of the exchange agreement.Ìý You will pay program fees directly to Laval.Ìý More information about the summer Business programs is available on .Ìý
