Appendix BB - Blood and Organ Donor Leave Policy
General Statement of Policy
In accordance with Illinois law (5 ILCS 327 – Organ Donor Leave Act), paid leave is provided for the purpose of organ, bone marrow, blood and blood platelets donation. Employees are not required to use accumulated sick or vacation leave time before being eligible for leave under this policy.
Eligibility
The policy is extended to all °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ permanent full-time and part-time employees who have completed six months or more of employment.
Approval
Blood and Blood Platelets Donation
Supervisory approval is required prior to blood or blood platelets donation. Leave time for blood or blood platelets donation should be arranged at a time that is workable for both the employee and the department. Employees are requested to provide as much advance notice as possible. Employees must provide documentation to their supervisor from the appropriate medical organization of blood or blood platelets donation.
Bone Marrow and Organ Donation
University approval is required prior to bone marrow or organ donor leave. Medical documentation must be provided to Human Resources or Academic Personnel prior to approval. Employees are requested to provide as much advance notice as possible.
Length of Leave
Blood Donation
An employee may use up to one hour or more of authorized leave to donate blood every 56 days.
Blood Platelets Donation
An employee may use up to two hours or more of authorized leave to donate blood platelets in accordance with appropriate medical standards established by the American Red Cross, America’s Blood Centers, the American Association of Blood Banks or other nationally recognized standards. Employees may not be granted leave more than 24 times in a 12-month period for blood platelets donation.
Organ and Bone Marrow Donation
An employee may use up to 30 (calendar) days of organ donor leave in any 12-month period to serve as a bone marrow donor or organ donor. Holidays do not extend the allowable leave maximum.
Continuation of Benefits
State and University employee benefits continue while on blood and organ donor leave. State paid contributions continue under this policy.
